My Perfect Black Friday Outfit

My Perfect Black Friday Outfit

$200 –

I love what J. Crew has come out with this Winter and I am featuring it in my Black Friday outfit of choice. J. Crew has some lovely button-up shirts and casual vests that are easy to wear in the Minnesota Winter. I paired the outfit with Sorel boots because, let’s be honest, it will most likely snow.

Top 10 Christmas Songs

Top 10 Christmas Songs

Yes, I already started listening to Christmas Music. Here is my top 10 list of favorite Christmas songs.

Maybe, it will help you start thinking about the holiday season and put a smile on your face. Or maybe it will remind you that you only have 35 days until Christmas and you better start shopping for gifts. Either way, it is time to get into the holiday spirit.

Winter Cape

Winter Cape

Dorothy Perkins coat

Circle scarf

I love the new cape trend for this Winter. What a fun way to be fashionable and stay warm. This cape from Dorothy Perkins has pretty detailing around the pockets and I like the tweed fabric. I also picked a high black boot that would pair nicely with the cape.

Warby Parker Class Trip Minneapolis

Warby Parker Class Trip Minneapolis

I have some serious love for Warby Parker. As an owner of two pairs, I am looking to add a third to my collection soon, very soon. All three will be under the cost of one pair at your local vision store (Sam’s and Walmart excluded).

Warby Parker Class Trip Minneapolis

I say very soon because the Warby Parker Class Trip is in Minneapolis! This is your chance Minneapolis to try on the Warby Parker collection in person instead of ordering try-on pairs from their website.

I am super excited!

I will be visiting the bus on 1340 Lagoon Avenue at Girard Street. They are open from 11AM-7PM each Wednesday-Sunday until September 1st.

For those of you who don’t know about Warby Paker yet. Here are the basics: WP started because the owners decided that eye glasses should be affordable. Seriously, the materials are not that expensive how can this company ‘who shall not be named’ be charging $300+ for a pair of basic eye glasses?

Easy, they have a monopoly. They own all of the glasses stores, manufactures, and get this; the insurance companies. They could charge what they wanted because they own it all.

Check out this 60 Minutes story if you want to see more about this.

So, Warby Parker said, “that’s not fair.”

They now sell full pairs of glasses for $95 if you don’t have a wacky prescription like I do. Mine are $125 and fraction of what they would be if I ordered from somewhere else.

If you want to do a home try-on all you need to do is go on the website, choose the frames, and check out. It is very simple.

I think I have done the home try-on now 5 times.

Do it as many times as needed until you find the frames you like. Then you order them from the website. They come in a nice case with a cleaning cloth.

If you have any issues their customer service is the best. Seriously, the best. Each tweet is responded to, each and every one.

Oh yeah, and for each frame someone buys they give one away. Yes, seriously. Win-win-win-freaking-win with this company.

This is the wave of the future people. Businesses that do good for their customers, do good for the community, and have fun.

Fennel and Orange Salad

Oh hello…

It sure has been a while since my last post and I sincerely apologize for my disappearance. Life has been pretty hectic for me, mostly due to an overabundance of exams and “busy work.”  Oh, and I’m still trying to figure out what to do after graduation next spring.  Needless to say, I have been hunched over books and in my spare time I am doing some soul searching. However, I am happy to report that I have not stayed out of the kitchen and have some delicious recipes to share, including this fennel and orange salad.

Fennel is something that I only recently started to use in cooking.  I am really not sure why I waited so long but I am definitely going to explore more recipes with fennel.  The sweet and crunchy texture is perfect in this light summer salad paired with sweet oranges and crunchy almonds. I ended up with some leftovers which I later mixed with shredded chicken, Greek yogurt, and a little mayonnaise which turned into quite a delicious chicken salad. Enjoy!

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
Ground black pepper, to taste
1 medium fennel bulb
2 medium navel oranges
3 tablespoons orange juice
1 small red onion
1/3 cup raw almonds

Slice the top off the fennel bulb, reserve the fronds for a garnish.  Remove the tough outer layer from the fennel bulb and thinly slice.  Thinly slice the red onion, place fennel and onion into a salad bowl.

Cut the bottom off of the oranges to stabilize while cutting off the rind. Slice the rind off of the orange making sure to separate the orange flesh from the white pith. Reserve the rinds with orange flesh on them for juicing later.

Take a small paring knife and slice the orange in between the thin white membranes, allow the orange slices and the juices to fall into the bowl. Squeeze out any remaining juice from orange bits you have leftover into the bowl.

Roughly chop the almonds and place into a small frying pan on medium heat. Toast for a few minutes or until light brown and fragrant.
IMG_1461 IMG_1463
Stir almonds into the salad bowl then drizzle the olive oil over the top. Season with salt and pepper.

Toss everything together, add more salt and pepper to taste if you please. Garnish with the fronds.

Serves 4.

Vera Bradley – New Summer Bag

It is almost summer here in Minneapolis. Today we are looking at a high of 77 degrees and no rain for the first time in a few weeks. It has been depressing.

I cannot think of anything better to brighten these last few weeks better than a bag from Vera Bradley. Both Emilee and I are fans of Vera Bradley. I personally like the bags because they are high quality, have lots of storage space, and come in really fun colors.

Barbara Frame Bag in Sun Valley

This summer I am doing a training program and will need a larger but fashionable bag to carry anything I may need. I thought this Barbara Frame Bag in Sun Valley would be the perfect fit. It is bright, large, and fashionable. I like the fact that it closes all the way as well.

Weekender in Sun Valley

I thought this would be a great purchase as well for weekend travel. I still have a few weddings I need to travel for later in the summer and I am taking a trip to a golf resort in Brainerd, MN in August. This is the Weekender in Sun Valley.

Hipster in Provencal

Lastly, I picked the Hipster in Provencal as a fun bag to use when I go to the Uptown Art Fair. It will be the perfect small bag for when I am in a large and crowded place with limited space.

Cheers to summer!

What is your favorite place to get a summer bag?

Handbag Dreams

handbag lusting

I have been a student for quite awhile now and I’m getting closer and closer to my graduation date (yippy!!!).  While I am excited to be done with exams, I am also excited to make an income again and be done living on a shoestring budget.  There is one particular item that I am very excited to purchase once I am a working gal: a designer handbag.  This is something I want to get for myself as a reward, and I know if I find the right bag, it will last a life time.  What would you splurge on as a reward to yourself?  What have you splurged on in the past?
